If you are me and there is nothing else

If you are me and nothing is not we

Why should I fear, or doubt your gentle care

When all that is exists that we might be.

I do not mind that time limits my thinking

And that soon this mind will cease to be

For I was present before time existed

And will be present, with you, when we are free

Of all the shackles of temporal thought or being

Of all the words which try to pin us down

Only then, when all has ceased to struggle

Shall unity laugh at the victor's crown.

Late evening snow has blanketed the land

Turning all that is to wedding cake,

Broken only by the shards which stand

Crystaled near the edges of the lake

Where she dances, innocent, as though

This virgin world were fashioned just for her

And its fragile unity, aglow

With promise, waits till we concur,

Joining the figures that she traces here

Across the Downs and out above the Sea

To link earth and water, fire and air,

In one eternal round of harmony.

That unseen blackbird almost overcomes

The radio from somewhere down the road

Oblivious to what I can't block out

As if the human world with all its load

Of noisy chaos, tension and distress

Were irrelevant to the simple joy

Of singing for the love of it, and less

Some naturalist's analysis of why

Birds sing or nest within the trees.

He sings, as I rejoice upon the Downs,

Ignorant of any time but now

Where we exist in unsought harmony

Merged together, making all things one,

          A natural evolving union.

The snow makes all things one in this grey light

Softening the edges of the trees

Into a hush of permanent delight;

The snow makes all things one.

Over the hedgerows and across the leas

Shadows hint at shapes beneath the bright

Expanse of winter; a robin calls to tease

The silence, warming with his song the sight

Which ravishes my senses as it frees

My soul to know that everything is right.

The snow makes all things one.
