Garsington

It could be November.

Low broken clouds threaten

Winds break up the valley

Kites risk the rain

Circling the park

The orchestra look sullen

Trudging up around the lake

Local scouts

Are pleased to take our bags

Chattering with enthusiasm of Iceland

We're in tent thirteen

Which keeps out all the draughts

As we enjoy our roasted artichokes

And Kalkidis olives

All picked up from Waitrose

At Oxford Services

On our way up from Hastings

Where the weather, when we left,

Was warm and wonderful.

Swallows scatter near the lake

Glimpsed as they sweep up

Above the trees

Which edge the Deer Park

Vanishing within the

Summer green.

 Dining at Garsington

Selfishly, I hope that I die first

But if I ever have to live alone

Meals like this may help to compensate

For empty days of being on my own.

A little block of chocolate

Powder'd o'er

With cocoa

And I'm wearing

My cream suit.

Mad dogs and Englishmen

Dine in the rain at Garsington.
